Any comment on the price?
just looked at the history on the price...not a deal
I picked one up! Be sure to get a 2.5" To 3.5" SSD/SATA converter. I'm getting the Icy Dock.
#2, you've seen lower? Lowest I saw on pricetrace.com was $111.20 back in June.
I am still unsure of the real reason for this.
don't forget bing 10% at newegg today.
Are these solid state drives fast and reliable now? If so, it would an advantage to have the OS on a drive that doesn't spin itself to death over time. It should make a system very fast if it can access this like ram, instead of banging on the disc drive continuously.
Or are these just a passing fancy?
How small of an SSD could you use for a server OS?
Smaller than you can use for the non-server version of same #7, presuming you don't load up a lot of big apps.
For example, Win2k server can fit on a 1GB HDD with room to spare if the pagefile is small. Win2003 server fits under 2GB if you keep control of updates, restores, etc.
However, there's not much point to an SSD for the server OS, unlike a desktop once it has finished booting all the files it continues to use are cached in memory and a server is expect to have longer uptime so seldom are reboots an issue.
SSD on a server is best for database or webserving, when the amount of data exceeds what can be cached in main memory. For OS you can just throw any budget drive in.
The OCZ vertex and agility are the most stable. While some have TRIM support, only ocz has trim initiated on the firmware itself. They call in firmware 1.41 garbage collection.
And the reason why the prices have gone up is a combo of supply going down for ocz(can't make the crap fast enough) and the RAM manufacturers jerking with the ram pricing, which affects NAND flash memory. You'll notice that most of the time OCZ is out of stock. It's no accident. Their crap works.
As for price, it's good.

interestingly my dad just bought a kingston one and it blew out his ethernet port, or he sucks at installing stuff
I want to pull a trigger on this..
i have an OCZ agility 120GB .. best investment i have ever had. It's very fast and if you do your homework, you'll find that read speed doesn't really diminish over time, but write does. Write speed won't be as fast as the WD VelociRaptor, but when it comes to overall usage speed, SSD with TRIM is the way to go. For OCZ, firmware 1.4 FTW! Intel is the best when it comes to SSD, but unless you have 499-899, then OCZ is the next in line.
Make sure you get an SSD drive with TRIM! Otherwise it will diminish by the hour .. TRIM is basically like a defragmentation capability for SSD drives. Without it, your speed will eventually go down the drain and DIE!
