You can sometimes find this camera (very nice camera for the price) with the 2 lens kit for about 50 bucks more. The two together give you wide and tele - good because the 4/3 lens mount means none of your existing lenses will work with this body.

I have this camera and love it...just a bit lower than what I paid for mine....However I have the two lens kit. If you want some sample images please see my flickr account. www.flickr.com/photos/signalsoldier

Also note that there are 4/3 mount adapters out there which allow you to use older lenses. In fact I own more manual focus lenses than I do digital. Vivitar and Rokkor are wide open with adapters if you do not mind manual focusing.

This is a great camera for the money. The newer e520 doesn't really add anything compelling IMO. The Olympus kit lenses are some of the nicest kit lenses out there. I got the two lens kit but use the 14-42 (double it to get the 35mm equivalent, so it's like a 28-84) the vast majority of the time.

Many people swear the Evolt system is the best bang for the buck. It does seem the E520 doesn't offer much over the E510, so the E510 is a great buy. Likewise, the two lens wide+tele can often be had for just over $500.

Would this be a good first SLR?

Yes. The E-510 is a great move. It's smaller with its 2x crop, but that still gets you 10x (or more) sensor surface area (and resulting image quality / ISO speed capability) of the majority of Point'n Shoot cameras. There are more limited numbers of lenses in the 4/3rds system, but there are definitely plenty for the novice/amateur.
