Can anyone tell me if this system is worth the money? Or point me to a site that can rate crap like this (with explanations of the ratings of course, not like amazon reviews). I have no idea how to tell if a receiver is any good or not.

I have had the Onkyo HT-R510 for a couple years now and I LOVE the quality! Mine is only a 6.1 surround with no HDMI, but it is amazing.

Only thing i have found about this receiver is that some people reported it overheated. You have to watch those reports though because there are so many morons out there that would keep a receiver, sat box, dvd player, etc in a CLOSED space, therefore it should overheat! NEVER keep items like this in a closed cabinet!

I would not hesitate to buy this if you did not want the HDMI upscaling or the audio through HDMI! If you want either of the above, then you will have to pull at least double the money out of your pocket Wink

If anyone says about the cheap Sony that has the audio through HDMI, etc - you will just show yourself to be a moron since the SOny system that has that for around $400 now, is a piece of junk that sounds like you are listening to it with your ears full of wax. Figured I would get that out of the way before the Sony people show up and blabber on about things they know nothing about.

Try shopping for a receiver only. You might find one with HDMI 1.2+ switching and Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD (for actual 7.1 where it's available)for under $400. The TX-SR605 comes to mind if you can find one. The TX-SR606 goes for about $450. Speakers would be extra of course but you could probably do a little better than Onkyo's HTIB speakers, no offense.

Oops, I see it on sale for under $400 also at CC.

And yes, avoid Sony and Bose.

Check Crutchfield & Pricegrabber for expert reviews.

Avoid bose? I thought they were the gold standard in audio equipment?
