Checkout the receiver products section on onkyousa.com and do a comparison yourself. There are some differences. Whether or not they are important depends on your exact needs.

For me, surround pre-outs are important since I like to use external amplification for the LR fronts. Neither unit has them.

I actually have the black 605 I bought from circuit city for $375 a couple months ago. So far its worked flawlessly. Keep in mind this unit has the full line of signal converting to a single HDMI. Most units do not convert analog or svideo signals to be sent out via hdmi or component.

If this was actually 285 I would already have this in my cart to replace my poineer 7.1 that doesnt have signal converting.
Any idea how annoying it is to have to run a component, svideo and an HDmi cable to your TV...

This is an awesome receiver. I recommend Onkyo (particularly the 805) over the Denon 3808ci and the Pioneer Elites. I think they sound better, have better amplifiers and cost less. They also have alot less distortion than the Pioneer Elites. The Elites look are pretty, but have way too much distortion. Rant ending...

One big problem with the 605 and 705 is that it will take a 1080i signal over component and down convert it to 720p over HDMI if you send it out that way (it will send it out as 1080i over component though). So if you have to use component video for any hi-def sources and send it out over HDMI to your display, you probably don't want these. This has been fixed in the 606. The 606 also has 4 HDMI inputs compared to two on the 605 but it only has 2 component inputs compared to 3 on the 605.

1080i -> 720p is not "down converted". There is actually more picture information present in a 720p stream than 1080i. If anything this receiver upconverts 1080i to 720p.

Just noticed the 606 has twice the HDMI inputs as the 605 (4 vs 2), which is very significant IMO.
