The one receiver to have. OK price.
Probably the best price you will find on a new unit for a while. Amazon prices vary a lot so get it now!
I got a refurb for $370 with three year extended/replacement warranty ($330 for receiver, $40 for coverage) and free shipping with no tax about three months ago.
This made my entire system come together, I'm extremely happy with it from so many standpoints, video quality, sound quality, single wire AV, adjustable inputs, on screen display and price. I had been tracking the 604's for over a year and this thing comes out at a lower price point with a better feature set...
This is a deal at any of the price points mentioned in this thread.
I bought this, and I'm actually pretty unimpressed by it. I had owned a Sony DB-930, which died by being struck by lightning. But it was a far more powerful receiver and the clarity outshone the Onkyo in every way. The Onkyo delivers a very flat sound, which at first seems like an equalizer issue, but then you realize it just doesn't have that punch that a truly powerful receiver should have. No longer do movie explosions have that vigor to move you in your seat, and music sounds like it is coming more from an oversized clock radio than a top of the line stereo.
I will have to respectfully disagree with rdcollns ... I literally brought my own speaker wire to CC and hooked up all of their AVRs to some KEF speakers (I own the 3005s).
This amp's SQ was above and beyond anything else in the price range. 7.1 power, XM, Sirrius, HDMI audio, Farajouda processor... awesome.
It shakes my entire apartment with clean sound, and on inefficient speakers. Only thing I don't like is the headphone output (a little noisy), but I don't use it for that.
Paid $430 and it was a steal then...
Good review of product here:

Sure there are better units, but this is more than enough for most... I got an SR805, but might have to return for being too big (physically too deep).
Nice receiver with good reviews. No tax and Free shipping. Need I say more?
If you want to compare quality between Sony products and Onkyo, you're going to have to talk about Sony's ES line. Otherwise, there is no comparison.
Not everyone wants "punch" out of a receiver. It can be very desirable for people to want flat sound out of speakers and receivers. "Why are you trying to add more bass to a song? The artist recorded it to sound a certain way, but you feel the need to change it?" It doesn't mean the speakers or receiver are bad. They are just trying to reproduce a pure sound. Don't mistake "punch" for quality. Just because you turn the music up louder doesn't mean that the sound quality got better.
Klipsch speakers, for instance, are designed to be a rock and roll type speaker. The sound from the speaker will definitely be shaped by it. I loved having Klipsch speakers at home when I lived with my old roommate. Does that mean Klipsch speakers are better than B&W speakers? No, it just means that the two companies have different goals for the sound they want their speakers to produce. You like Coke, I like Pepsi.
The entry level Sony receivers provide more features at a lower price than most other receivers but they compromise sound quality in order to do so. That is their marketing strategy, which there's nothing wrong with. It just depends on your overall goal with is with your components. A $500 entry level Sony will beat a $500 Onkyo in terms of features, but can't beat it in sound quality. You want those features in an Onkyo, you'll pay more. You want Onkyo sound quality in a Sony, you'll buy their ES line.
#9 talking about Sony in a favorable manner makes you a swine. Now go roast some bleach.

toddsucks, you misunderstood what #9 is trying to point out. Does that make you a swine?
#11, I applaud you for being able to read. Seems a lost skill these days. I actually said nothing good or bad about any product line in my previous statement. But, to have some fun, the Sony ES line actually comes with a 5 year parts and labor warranty straight out of the box. Any other major A/V manufacturer do that?
Once again you have spoken favorably towards Sony. Therefore you are a swine. And once again I ask you to roast some bleach.
sincerely,
toddsucks
Once again, you can't read. What if a Yugo came with a LIFETIME warranty? It doesn't make the car a good car or the company a good company. It only means that the warranty is good. Good warranties are not a reason to buy something.
