is this a good unit for the price?
deacent unit...ok price...ecost had the refurb a while back for less
Putting eCost together with refurb is like putting crabs with syphallis.
There really isn't a comparison between a new unit from NewEgg and a refurb from eCost.
For $300 seems ok.
good price! now we need deal for a good set of speakers with sub.
check shoponkyo.com for specials and refurbs. their refurbs come with a 1 year warranty.

Newegg has a good strategy, even wirh 15% off from PP, the price still higher than a month ago.
Very good price for new. Got it for $320 off amazon a few weeks ago and that was about the cheapest I had seen in months off the major sites. I would highly recommend this for a solid home theater setup.
I have been tracking receiver prices for a couple of months now and this is the best I have seen the 606 go for.
90w / Channel, 4 HDMI In with Faroujda DCDi Edge, DTS HD, no THX but in the Onkyo world to get THX you have to jump at least another $200.
Great deal, NewEgg rocks!
out of stock!
This is a great receiver, but unless you can find decent speakers for a 7.1 setup, I'd suggest getting the Onkyo HT-S7100 home theatre in a box, which also includes this receiver.
You can get that for ~$300.
Onkyo is junk... horrible amps inside of them.. wouldnt even put this in my garage for outside amplification.
No blue light on the volume knob makes it feels like lower end... I'd go for 7 or 8 series just for the light. Even the 2 generation earlier model TX-SR604 had the light.
Why do you care for the blue light? do you shop at K-Mart?
Anyways, I have bought an Onkyo refurbished system (5.1) from their online site about 3 years ago... still works like new... yes agree speakers are not the best it comes with... plan to upgrade them eventually but are good enough for now...
I heard great reviews on the Athena speakers...
Also, be sure to upgrade the speaker wire these HTIB systems come with... makes the speakers sound much better!
No blue light is a feature!
When blue LEDs were scarce, a blue LED stood out as exclusive. Now every piece of cheap crap has them.
I cover 'em with electrical tape.
Agreed! they are very annoying, especially at night when watching a movie.. can be distracting to the eye... most cannot be turned off/dimmed.
