Anyone tried a refurb from Onkyo?
I hear they are ok. All of the 606s had a rocky start from what I remember, but I can't recommend them due to the issues that mine has.
My 606 crashes when it tries to transfer some Comcast Cable channels from the 1080i that comcast gives it to the 1080i that it says it should just be passing through. I have no idea why it is doing any video processing at all on the signal, but it obviously is, as my TV w/o the rec shows a few white pixels at the top of the screen on some channels and the 606 shows a weird pattern of stripes at the top that extend a good 50-100 pixels into the actual picture. I should see if I can turn off fa roooj da.
It only crashes on a few channels, and only once a week maybe. But it is a pain in the ass, just not quite enough for me to give it back so they can re-sell it as refurb.
It also loses sound once a month, but that might also be my cable box... but my old Pioneer rec had no issues. Who knows I might have got a lemon.
Too bad it's not just 20% off, instead of 10 then another 10.
My refurb has been flawless and came with a 1y warranty.
Got mine new and it'll shut off automatically if the volume is turned up high enough when watching dvd. Nothing is placed on top of it where the heat vents. Other than that it is fine.
#5, what speakers are you using?
Seems like a pretty ishy price for a refurb. I've seen these as low as 326 at Amazon.
#6 I am using Bose Acoustimass speakers. Not sure if it matters with this problem..
I have been looking at this model but was wondering if it has enough power to run two Tower speakers cleanly. I also like the 806 but it's a really heavy receiver.
mine is fine but somehow one of the video input is bad. I still havent got time to call them yet
#5. the problem to your problem is the speaker is stronger than the receiver. OHMZ not for this receiver.
#2 - did you set the HDMI pass through to "auto" in the settings? I had a similar issue and that resolved it.
#5: The BOse crap (Sorry) that you're using is causing an impedance trip. This is a feature built into the amp to prevent damage to the amp. Even though the amp is 4ohm stable (6ohm nominal), the speakers (rated @4ohms) that you have hooked up will go as low as <2ohms when driven hard. You will have to buy (5 or 7, depending on how many speakers are in place) 4ohm non-inductive resistors (at least 20watt type) and put them in series with the positive lead of your speaker wire at the speaker end, then insert that bare lead into your speaker. Use 1 resistor per speaker. This will bring them close to 8ohms. If the sub is powered by speaker wires (not through the sub-out rca), then get 2 more and do the same as the rest of the setup. Now you will be able to crank up the volume without the amp shutting down, since the amp will "see" the load as 8ohms. And sorry #10, but you are clueless about audio. Speakers too strong for the amp? What !!!!
I have had a jvc for years, with no complaints.
refurb Onkyo 606 working fine here. HDMI switching and upconversion is great. I have one device which only has component output, and the 606 converts it to HDMI for me. Sound quality is superb.
One odd thing when I first got it... the amp would produce a constant-volume buzz when it was turned on cold. The buzz slowed down after 2-10 seconds and went away. It didn't matter what the volume was set to, the buzz was always the same loudness. Hasn't happened after the first 2 weeks, and I'm using all the same HDMI devices.
Thanks #12 for the info.
