this is a good receiver.
All Onkyo receivers are renowned for their heat problems, which cause explosions that can maim and / or kill. FACT!
Harmon Kardon, Denon, and Yamaha all make superior receivers with a better feature set.
#2, maybe get one of those laptop fan to put under it will help.
This is a great price for the receiver.
I've been using it in the living room for about a month now and find that it produces a very clean sound. We have 3 sources hooked up via HDMI (PS3, cable box, and Xbox 360) and one analog source hooked up via component. It doesn't upconvert any digital signal but does a decent job upconverting the analog source.
Where this receiver really shines is the lossless audio codecs (dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD MA, Lossless PCM). I thought Dolby Digital sounded great but stepping up to the next gen audio formats was sensational (think along the lines of how it felt to hear dolby digital vs regular stereo).
As for the heat issues, this one is well ventilated and hasn't exhibited any problems. I would recommend it to anyone!

I have the 605 it's a dang fine system. NO problem with heating or none of that jazz. I keep it in a place where it will be properly circulated by AC.
If someone wants to buy my 605 for 250 so I can get this puppy I'm game!
I can also vouch for this unit as I got mine about 3 weeks ago. I'm *very* happy with it. Audyssey 2EQ works great. Yes, it produces a lot of heat but I haven't experienced any problems thus far.
This is a good price for this unit. Definitely worth picking up. Don't forget that this unit has 4 HDMI in ports.
Yea, I've read that the Audyssey2EQ auto-calibration REALLY DOES WORK! It even calibrates stuff other than distance, phase or levels that are beyond the average home theater enthusiast such as myself! I def plan on getting an onkyo when I upgrade, because the audyssey is one of the best auto-calibrations systems out yet.
This is a very good receiver. Pair this with a nice set of surround speakers and it will really make those all in one systems sound like crap.
Timeless240: The calibration is a very simple process. Takes about 10 mins and just 4 keypresses. You just plug in the included mic in the dedicated jack. The receiver knows to start the calibration procedure once the mic is detected and asks you to place the mic in the first (primary) of 3 listening locations and hit ENTER on the remote. You just stay silent as it sends a series of escalating tones from each speaker and analyzes the sound. As it completes, you just do it again to the other 2 locations and save the data collected. Unplug the mic and youre done! If you feel you need to fine-tune it, you can.
One thing I found annoying is that if youre using bare wire for the speakers, the holes are at a diagonal angle so its a little awkward to screw them in. This is just a nit-pick since you rarely have to mess with it once the cables are set up AND the posts also accept banana plugs if/when I plan to move to those.
Darn it! Just within 2 weeks it went down to this price. Bought it for 399$
Onkyo. Analog to HDMI video conversion. 4 HDMI inputs. Sweet!!
Ben posted this too late, once again. Price is $390, bringing total to $366 after coup
Awesome deal for this unit, which is probably the best value out there < $500.
