Now that gmail allows free phone calls, I wonder if this is worth anything at all.
This is not "free". It costs $180. Very bad title.
Well.. google voice - free, but you still need to use a computer. I think the real price would be around 60-70.
I've had Ooma for over a year and I paid $180 back in the day. I am very pleased with it. No yearly fee, one time up front charge. Google Voice will give you outbound calls through your computer, but how will you receive inbound. Google Voice still wants to forward all calls to another number for inbound.
I think #4 is The Talker.
This looks like a great deal. Especially if you get poor cell reception at home.
OOS at Amazon. Not available at that price. Only third party sellers.
This has been offered many times before--look at the "history" link at the top for more comments.
We've had these boxes since Feb '10. We save $60/mo, so it's already paid for itself.
It is standalone, so you do NOT need a PC to run it. Totally trouble-free.
(A second line will cost ~$10/mo, but still way ahead of the phone company costs.)
Glad I got in before that happened, #7.
There are some reports of Ooma claiming that Core units manufactured after 6/10 will have the monthly regulatory fees applied, but that is unconfirmed. The description clearly states 'no monthly fees' so they better not try that crap with me.
Their web site says "Free Home Phone Service" then there is an asterisk. The * footnote says "Pay only applicable taxes and fees." I clicked on the "Click here for more details" link. I entered my zip code, and it said I would have to pay a $3.49 monthly charge for the following fees and taxes.
1) Regulatory Compliance Fee
2) 911 Service Fee
3) Federal Universal Service Charge
4) State and local taxes, fees and surcharges
So this doesn't appear to be free of monthly charges. As stated in post #9, maybe the older units are free of fees. I would find out before purchasing this unit!
#8, wtf are you doing on your phone that your bill is $60 a month?
