^ The point is that offroad vehicles can flip. You may then want the winch to work so you can use it to roll the vehicle over, and/or not losing the acid so it'll start.
I prefer to drive my vehicles upside down at all times. The last optima battery lasted for 5 years & that included a daughter under the age of 10 who tended to leave dome lights on.
Really Dave? Off-road vehicle flip? electric winch? Where do you live, Kalahari desert among the bush people? LOL
There's lots of hilly regions in the US. People go offroading recreationally or to get to a remote campsite. Granted flipping usually only follows trying to be a daredevil or too much alcohol but if people can wreck on a flat road, people can manage to flip on a hill too.
Then there's the weather, what is safe and easy when it's dry may not be so easy when it's muddy, snowy, or icy when hills are involved. Once when it was icy I slid right off the side of a paved road into a ditch and came pretty close to flipping over due to being in a top heavy SUV.
dave_c , when i mentioned using this for a backup to a sump pump, you suggested a deep-discharge marine battery instead. that would indeed be cheaper, but wouldn't that also be somewhat corrosive to nearby metal, like a washing machine and dryer?
^ I have not noticed any corrosion near mine. I don't recall the details of our discussion but my backup sump pump is a separate made-as-a-backup kit designed to run off a 12V SLA battery and includes a charger and (vented) plastic box the battery sits in. That box sits about 1 foot away from a plain steel case lid from an UPS that has no rust at all (inside is not painted). The UPS isn't part of the kit, it's just convenient to have an UPS next to a big 12V battery for other purposes.
These AGM batteries work in any position. It would come in handy if you end up on your roof a lot.
So this would work up side down? No battery acid to leak out?
Delco "eye" batts won't spill out either.
I don't know of any moron that would try to mount a battery upside down. You're the first.

#4, davec thinks of everything. Question his logic at your peril.

This is the one I have, but I think it was cheaper and on sale at the time, you might find the equivalent cheaper elsewhere:

^ Oh, I know I saw a few of those flicks but can't remember them much.
This battery looks so cool, it must be worth $200... Sort'a like a Dyson Vacuum...
