This is better than most 1080p televisions out there.
Plasma is the way to go. The only drawback is slightly more power consumption, and possible image retention (not burn-in) although that's usually not an issue.
Got mine with extended warranty from them, love it. My wife kept telling me that it's too big for the bedroom (no smartass comment from the peanut gallery), but I told here that most of the 37" (the smallest I'm willing to go with in our bedroom) cost about the same if not more!
I wish it wasn't frowning at me.
Seriously, when is Ben going to quit linking to dishonest businesses?? This reseller seems to be getting worse by the month: http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Sixth_Avenue_Electronics_6th_Ave
I would stay away.
Very Dissatisfied
from them as a gift. The screen would not work when we took it out of the box and plugged it in. Only the sound worked. We returned it to the store with the receipt and their customer service detected a hairline crack in the screen. Since this was classified as "physical damage" by the manager there was nothing they would do for us. If you buy a broken product with physical damage from them you are screwed. We had a long discussion with several managers and customer service reps about this, but they would do nothing for us.

Sixth Avenue is a merchant to avoid. We received a portable DVD player ($9
The box containing the portable DVD player looked perfectly fine and there were no outward signs of damage. Everything in the box was still in its factory packaging material. The box was not dropped or mistreated after it was purchased from them.
The moral is that if you are buying electronics from this firm you will need to physically unpack it at the store plug it in and make sure it works before taking it out of the store. If you buy a broken product due to any physical damage and take it home you are out any and all money you spent. I would be especially wary of getting a large screen TV in a sealed box from them. If that box has been dropped or mistreated somewhere between Asia and your house and the screen is cracked you are totally screwed. See the person below from 12/17/08 who received the cracked 50" LG Plasma and is now out $1300. Buyer beware applies to any and all purchases from 6th Ave.
Also same price at Sears.
Been looking for an LCD at this price 40"+, but this plasma is tempting.
This series has some stellar reviews too, hardly any negs.
When viewed side by side with LCD sets at BB the whites seemed grayer than it's LCD counterparts but that could be a non issue once at home.
The build quality of the set is impressive.
Been reading a bunch of horror stories on consumeraffairs of recent LCD sets of all makes going belly up at about 18 months.
This set looks like it would have better longevity.
You need to inspect your deliveries before agreeing to accept it. And also, that's what credit cards are for. You can dispute your payment.
edit
I bought this same TV a week ago from newegg great delivery (much faster than what was promised). The TV looks great colors vibrant. I am one of those who wanted to go the 1080p LCD route, but display quality was more important (and had to stick to a budget). I am very happy with the TV so far and the colors are amazing.
You won't find a better looking TV this size for $700.
I got this exact tv for $1,100 from amazon.com back in January or February. It's a great tv. DVD's and HD-DVD's look amazing on it.
We mainly watch 1080i TV feeds down-scaled to 420p by our DVR on it and even that PQ is really great.
When my living room crt tv craps out, i will be getting a panasonic 50" plasma.
Deep blacks, higher CR than my HD Toshiba CRT. No window screening. Panny plasma is best of breed now -- drawbacks gone.
This is a beautiful TV and the sound is pretty good, too.
I bought it back in Oct. from 6ave. It arrived very quick and in perfect condition.
at this size i'd get the 1080p. plasma has better contrast and speed, but i'd also get LCD for the lower power consumption and less burn in problems.
The lower power consumption of LCD is nearly as big of a myth as "burn in " problems.
I love this TV... xbox360 via hdmi, htpc via hdmi, ota HD, then run SPDIF to my 7.1 receiver. Everything looks incredible. Bought it at BB for $923 out the door back in Nov, including a free xbox360 arcade and a philips portable dvd player (crap).
only 720 p. not worth it.
#16: True to an extent, since it depends on the brightness of the shows/movies you watch. LCD's draws the same power most of the time because the backlight is always on. Plasma's draw more during brightly lit scenes (think CSI Miami) versus darker ones (think the last 2 Batman movies).
Then don't buy one. There will be more left for those of us with a clue.
