depending upon a buyers tax one or the other may be cheaper or the same price.
Unless you happen to live within about five miles from Fry's it'll cost you as much in gas to go pick it up than the $2 shipping. And not only will Fry's charge you tax on the device, the a$$hoes'll charge tax on the shipping, too. I'd rather just pay the $2 to 'egg and deal with them rather than Fry's.
Is that even legal, to charge tax on shipping fees?
Yes, it all depends upon what is written in the sales tax rules of that state where the Frys is located and where the item is going to be used/ consumed. Being a business owner I know and have documentation from NJ Sales Tax Department recommending my business ti charge sales tax on total item value including shipping if the customer is from NJ. Obviously if an out of state customer buys stuff form my store, her/she wont be charged any sales tax.
So they are just following sate's sales tax laws, not making profit by charging sales tax on shipping too for which you had questioned their legality.
$2 is the price you pay to not have to deal with the rodeo cowboy at fries
You'd burn 2 bucks in gas driving there.
