I own the two-handset, no answering machine, version of this Philips phone system (the handsets look identical to those pictured, at least), and the battery life is TERRIBLE with my set. I've tried a few different sets of batteries with both handsets and it hasn't made any difference in performance. The LED that flashes when you've missed a call apparently drains the batteries quickly. Another problem is the non-shared phone book list. Each phone has an independent list, but you can sync the list between handsets. Unfortunately, if you don't clear out the list on a handset before transferring from the other handset, you will end up with duplicate entries.

On the plus side, voice quality is good, speakerphone performance is good, and the phones look nice. The phone book list has a nice feature where you can assign entries to any of three different groups and give those groups unique ring tones. So, for example, you can assign your family's numbers to a group and give them their own ring, assign your friends to another group with its own ring, etc.

If Philips has fixed the battery life problem then these are ok phones. If not, then you should look for a different system.

And #1 is correct. Panasonic phones seem to be the best.

They're gone now. I've had my Panasonics for a year and a half and they work great. They don't have any of the battery problems my Unidens had, and even if they did, they use rechargeable AAs.
