#2 says to avoid, but most large screen TV's under $2000 all fall into the same category. This Philips has received very good reviews in the AV field and with any large screen you need to buy an extended warranty to CYA if and when something goes wrong. I just had my Philips 42" plasma go tits up and the repair costs were close to $1400 (it cost $1K new). I had an extended warranty / it was 3 years old / they paid me $850 as a settlement / I got this Philips 42" LCD with free HDMI cable and using Fat-Wallet my out of pocket was less than $740. Purchased a 5 year extended warranty for $99.00 - So brand new TV with 6 years of warranty for no money out of pocket. Nice.

Of course plasma TV's are much more expensive to repair than LCD TV's. My friend had an LCD TV with a broken power supply. He replaced the power supply for $30 bucks. In that situation, you don't really need an expensive warranty.
