Yeah that sales tax sux. I find myself checking out B&H Photos more for large ticket items. Also TigerDirect. Trouble is, none of these places are as good as Amazon for shipping/customer service. I also check out Newegg if sales tax is unavoidable on a particular item.
RE: contrast ratio - each manufacturer measures it any way they want. There's no standard. It's one of the most meaningless specs. If there was one true standard, a millions-to-one brightness ratio would be like placing you right next to a supernova (yes, you'll be blinded).
