Philips Outlet has the refurbished Philips DVD Player w/ HD Upconversion (DVP5982/37) for $40 + $0 shipping = $40 shipped. This DVD Player can upconvert your DVDs to 1080p and plays DivX files. USB Direct plays photos and music from USB flash drives. [BizRate]

Isn't this the one which you can using a USB cable hook up an external HD and read off your DIVX stored movies?

This unit does not like U3 flash drives, so beware if you really like the U3 functionality of your flash drive... you'll have to choose if you want to remove the U3 software/etc.

Other than that I like mine but have one enhancement request. I have not yet figured out if you can skip to a particular point in time in a DIVX/XVID file, right now I'm just seeking at 16x (maybe 32x as well, I don't remember.) But, it took a few minutes to get to the 45 minute point in a movie... oh well.

Ordered this thing back on 2/22 (shipped on 2/28...) and still waiting to receive it, but i blame FedEx Ground! Bunch of Dumb-A$$es. I hope it works well! (if they didn't toss it around the back of the truck and play football with it!)

No HDMI cable when I bought mine. Just the standard three colored RWY cables.

#4--I ordered the same day as you and just got mine. I was concerned about it being a refurb, but used it for about 4 hours last night without any problems.

For those who care, it has no optical out or S-Video.

Upconversion on my 40 inch Samsung LCD was a noticable improvement over my Philips 642. DivX/XviD files even looked better. I have yet to try an external HDD, but a 4GB flash drive worked well.

It came with the .40 firmware and .43 is available. Follow the update instructions to the letter--especailly when burning the CD. Philips would have made the process a lot easier if the USB port could have been used for the update.

The remote sucks and and the menus are slow. I've read you cannot have audio over HDMI and Digital Out at the same time. I can't verify this until this weekend when I have time to connect it to my receiver.

All in all, a good buy for $40.

With 1080p output, this is a great alternative to the more expensive Blu-Ray players that everyone was moaning and whining about like a bunch of haggard old washer women, yesterday. Now you can buy your Blu-Ray or HD-DVD discs and play them in this, instead.

Based on what #8 is saying, I'm thinking that a crappy remote and slow menus can be quite frustrating. Can someone confirm if this is true, and how bad it is?

I presently have the 642 and would not say either of those things about that model.

m0f0 the stalking h0m0 once jammed her car cassette player when she thought her cassette player will play her pink ipod without using FM modulator or cassette adapter. I'm sure m0f0 tried to play the winning format HD-DVD in her old cd player.

#3 I have the 642. It wasn't that obvious, but if you press the "display" button on the remote and then type in the minutes and seconds and press enter, it skips.

Perhaps this works on your (this) model too.

Crappy remote? Yes, it doesn't look stylish but good enough for us to watch any DVD or DivX movies.
Slow menus? Yes, but compare to other BD/ HD DVD players, it's much faster.
What else if you guys don't focus on its price?
I bought one and now really want another though I even don't know where I will put it in my house.

This is what I would buy expecially with HDDVD losing the battle.

Just got mine and set it up. Upconversion looks great. Next best thing to a $400 Blu Ray. I am using HDMI output. The menus are fine, the remote is fine, read your manual. For $40 this thing is a great buy. Only downside is 90 day warranty.

Upconversion has won the format war.
