I was looking for this same model yesterday, and amazon had it for $68. Good deal, especially for those of us with an HDTV wanting to avoid buying an expensive blu-ray player. i'll use it to upconvert my regular dvds. thanks ben.

This unit rocks. I've had mine for a couple of weeks and it's great. OBTW, you can plug in ANY usb but it has to be formatted fat32.

I am amazed at the amount of sales from the refurbished store. I would think that would be an indicator of something Neutral

the USB is great... but the response on this unit is kinda slow compared to the old DVP642. For example, turning on/off the unit takes 10-20 seconds why? selecting different audio track takes a few seconds, why? the old DVP642 was very quick in response for the same features. Also, I found the output color of this unit is a bit dark and not natural... I can assure you that it's not my TV... because over-the-air HD programs look great on my TV.

The USB feature is great, however....

I've had the DVP-642 for about 3 years now and I can tell you a few things about the Philips players in general. The main reason to get one is the ability to play various formats that others won't. It will even play PAL on an NTSC TV. The functionality is limited; fast search is max of 4x in VCD and 8x in DVD. They won't resume playback from where you ejected the disk although this is a claimed feature. The build quality is poor. If you use a universal remote none of them (I've tried at least 5 brands - Universal is the best) will power it on without pressing the button at least two times and most of them treat the Chapter Up button as Power. You may have to program a separate power off button. The display gets garbled and you have to unplug the unit to reset it. Philips provides no firmware updates.

#5 I don't have any of those problems and I'm using a universal remote with mine. There are plenty of firmware updates and even a hacked firmware that expands the functionality. My 642 never gave me a day of trouble and my parents have it noew and it still works like new.

I have this unit and have found that an external, USB hard drive must have it's own power to be recognized.

I was sceptical of the the upconverting DVD players but man they make a world of difference on an HD TV.. even a SD TV. it looks much better on all fronts. this is a good deal too. if you need a DVD player I would recommend something like this.
