Philips Outlet has the refurbished Philips DVP5990 DVD Player with HD Upconversion for $40 with free shipping. It upconverts to 1080p over HDMI, with compatibility with MP3, WMA, DivX, DivX Ultra, JPEG, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 formats.

I use 5990 with WD external HD, works great but

My only problems is how do I turn off my HD without having to get off the sofa?
I'm a lazy ass, but if I leave my HD plugged into the USB port, hard drive will stay on spinning 24hrs a day even it the DVD player is powered off.

Does anyone else have similiar situation?? or figured out a clever way of doing this???

Buy one of those USB powered HD like WD Passport. If there is no power, the HD shuts itself off. The only drawback is the highest capacity is currently at 500GB and it's pricy.

I never buy refurbs in electronics.

The fact that they have so many is a sure sign a high percent of these were defective from the beginning...why would I want such junk from such a poor quality manufacturer?

They're just trying to get some cash out of something that should have gone in the trash.

Phillips needs to start selling on ebay; plenty of suckers there...
