Is there any way to use these without playing music? Even if I plug them in and pause the music, would that work?

The noise canceling box part contains 1 AA battery and is connected to the earphones with a 2 ft wire. The wire isn't long enough to put the box in your pocket and there isn't a clip to put the box on your shirt so it just kinda hangs there. It works well - its just awkward to wear.
yeah, just sound isolating is better.
Many of the posts here in the past about these headphones revolved around their design flaw: the noise processing unit is a box that dangles on their cord and makes walking with them impossible as its weight will pull them out of your ears.
