Just returned it even it is just $25.
Picture was good when it is not frozen.

Phillips outlet has a rep for just selling broken returns on the hopes that you won't bother returning it.

the upscaling factor is consider non-existent, at least for me, I can't see any significant difference between 480p & upscaled 1080p on Philips divx players.

#3. Are you sure your TV does not have up-converting?

I found the Phillips players do better than my Vizio TV.

If you own a 1080p TV odds are it has upscaling. If you have any other TV, you are best off not bothering with upscaling anyway.

Don't but this DVD player without USB, that ability makes a huge difference.

I don't play this(refurb) too often as I usually just watch cable tv but I had it for more than 3 months and it has been very good so far with just one minor issue. When I play movies from usb sometimes the player mute the sound. I have to go to the osd menu and un-mute the sound. Other than that couple times recently it works very nicely. USB is the only way to go.

Also, make sure you name your files descriptive but short. I've stated this before:
hardcoreanal_01.avi and hardcoreanal_02.avi will be the same, truncated to just hardcore

I don't need another DVD player but this is the one has the USB and only $25 for a refurb. Pictures are as good as my Toshiba. My Toshiba has problem reading some DVD-R at the end but the Philip 5960 is painful. I was not thinking about returning it (for only $25) but my wife refused to use a player that might freeze up at any moment.

BTW, the 5960 is painfully slow when turns on and it is lacking a essential optical audio output for home stereo. It is cheaply made and all output are not gold plated. I used the component out and let my Mitsu do the 1080i upconvert. Cannot comment on the HEMI.

My point is... these refurb are low quality and problematic.

#8 Oohps didn't mean to spread misinformation. I was referring to the DVP5982/37. That /37 threw me off thought was my model.

call your local bestbuy ask them to check if they have any 5982 available that's on clearance, if they don't, then ask them to check on the inventory on the BestBuy around you. I got mine on clearance for $27.99 brand new.

#10, that's perverse! How can you watch stuff like that? I thought you were a good, clean and wholesome individual like me. How sad...

BTW can I borrow that disc you mentioned?

The 3960/37 Model I got for $25 a month ago does have USB. Will work well for some TV and not others. I am happy with what they sent me. I guess I am one of the lucky one. If it works, this divx player can do a lot for you. Thanks Ben for the $25 deal

My own experience with a Philips refurb was mixed. I got a mini-theater system with speakers and a subwoofer that sound surprisingly good. But the DVD player often freezes or has trouble loading discs, a problem that I've seen mentioned in other reviews.

So, I like No. 13's idea of checking whether one of these is on clearance at a local store, That way, you can test it out but not be stuck dealing with shipping it back if it has annoying quirks.

Best buy has a DVP5990/37 for $50 on sale. On first glance it has similar features to the DVP5982/37, is it the updated model?

This DVD player upconverts your DVDs to 720p/1080i also, for $20.00 after 30 dollars mail-in rebates. Just bought one the other day, haven't open it yet, I heard that the HDMI cable come's with it?? If true, that cable worth 20 buck already..
Office Depot rebates is pretty good, Trusted. Can't buy it on the web and pick-up. Must buy and pay it at the store to get rebate.
