#1, first of all, this is a bloody $40 DVD player. Second, almost nobody can tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p unless you're running some sort of benchmark program. Your eyes and brain can't... sorry. Particularly true considering the kind of television and HT system someone is going to have, if they're considering buying *this*.

You could easily see the difference between a 1080p and 1080i display; especially when they are placed next to one another. Even more so when you stand close. 1080p is remarkably better. Just pay a visit to your local BJs or Costco see for yourself.

Remember the source resolution. Upconverting doesn't make it magically better than the original material.

Upconverting seems worth it while waiting out HD/Blue-Ray to drop or one to come ahead.

Are you sure? I don't see mention of it in the specs:

    Connector Type
    1 x SPDIF output ( RCA phono ) - Rear, 1 x HDMI ( 19 pin HDMI Type A ) - Rear, 1 x Composite video output ( RCA phono ) - Rear, 1 x Component video output ( RCA phono x 3 ) - Rear, 1 x Audio line-out ( RCA phono x 2 ) - Rear

    The 3960 doesn't have a USB port.

This has the ability to play Xvid/Divx MPEG4 video files which trumps 1080p, IMHO. If 1080p is a show-stopper for ya, go ahead with the cheap Memorex

Please make sure you don't output 1080i or 1080p if your TV doesn't have a native 1080 resolution. Even with 1080 native resolution, you are better off sending your TV 480p instead of 1080i because any TV that is 1080p is likley to have a better scaler than the DVD player. And #2 is an rodeo cowboy. Many people can tell the difference between interlaced and progressive especially during fast action scenes, and even if your eyes don't see the interlacing, there is a difference in picture clarity.
That being said, a high quality DVD player (I have a JVC I really like) has much better output than this player at any resolution. Only buy this player if you intend to use the DivX feature, which functions amazingly well. However, I use the USB port on mine more than the disc tray, and highly recommend getting the version with the USB port.
