My brothers, a moment please as we watch yet another previously solid brand name slip into the cesspool that is the discount computer world.

    *sigh*

I don't understand. Newegg or Plextor?

I never thought of Plextor as an unusually "solid" brand name, and this seems typical for Newegg.

According to Plextor support pages - "ConvertX products are not compatible with Windows Media Center Edition or Windows Vista OS."

Plextor used to be the shiznits when it came to burners. Their 8x scsi burner was nearly a year ahead of the rest of the field. Top notch hardware, backed by the kind of support that you only get from domestic manufacturers (support for red hat from the get go as an example).

A few other guys come to mind:
Mediavision (they gave Creative a run for their money)
    Gullimont (remember the Kyro chipset?)
ActLabs (perhaps the best steering wheel in history - the forceRS)
Diamond Labs (back in the day, as in '95-97, Diamond was a domestic)
CH Products (The definitive joystick manufacturer in the 90's maker of The Flightstick Pro)
3DFX (remember the first time you saw a 3dfx demo screen?)
MultiTECH (the best 2400baud modems on the market - blew Hayes away)

    and a handful still exist!
    Happaugue (excellent video capture hardware)
Wacomm (the industry leader in graphic tablets)
Logitech (eh... they come up with enough nice stuff, haven't sold their souls yet, and Canada is almost domestic!)

#1, I could be wrong but their video capture hardware was never rated highly. Or are you talking about their recent DVD burners?
