Lots of good deals on Polk speakers on the Egg. You can assemble a very good sounding HT system from these for reasonable (ghetto dog) prices.

These "good deals" are on 1-2yr old (or more) models. Very inefficient @ 86db. These need more amp than most people have to drive these at H/T levels. That's why these are so cheap, and "always" on sale. Beter off looking for something in the 88>90db range of sensitivity. Your amp will thank you. Also, the low end sucks on these, so be prepaired to factor in the cost of a sub (or 2) when thinking of a H/T setup. All in all, not a good deal. People have to stop buying the name, instead of the quality.

Uhh, any receiver out there is going to drive these far louder than most people would ever listen. And if you like it that loud, these are the wrong speakers.

I always wonder about the delivery of speakers through UPS/USPS. It's a good price but I'm too afraid of having the speakers damaged through the transit.

Polk Audio still rocks...I have some old Polk 10's as rears in my man-cave, and have thoroughly abused them over 20 years. They have outlived all other components...

I love Polks. They have good quality speakers at reasonable prices. Their RTi and LSi speakers are very good and not overpriced for what you get. These monitors are not as good but what do you want for $160 for a pair of floor standers. They will sound good, but don't expect that they will sound as good as Polk's other offerings. There are also other brands out there that will sound better and may or may not be priced reasonably.

Also, Polk customer service is excellent. There is also a very good online community forum. Vintage Polks are also very good and people sell them at reasonable prices too.

#2, most floor standing speakers still require a subwoofer for HT applications. Again, while I agree with a lot of your points you have to remember that these are not meant to be top-of-the-line speakers. Also, these are not hard to drive off a receiver, and I agree with #4 on loudness.

If you want a good sounding HT but have very little money, then either buy these, vintage Polks, buy a used pair of Polk's newer products, or go somewhere else. The audio world has so many brands to choose from and you need to do your research before deciding. Again, these are great for their price. There are also bad apples out there; Bose products may not sound any better these or the R line but are priced much-much higher.

It's funny someone is knocking them on being 1-2 year old models as if there was some great new breakthrough in speakers. Speaker tech was quite mature 20 years ago, though cabinet calculations did go faster after everyone had a PC, a little over 20 years ago for businesses that needed one.

Granted, the low end is poor on any $80 speaker unless it's that price because you picked it up used.

yeah, those new speakers that use a modulated laser beam oscillating across pure sheets of platinum 3 nm thick might be better, but for $80 these are bound to be a better deal, dollar for dollar.
