Newegg has the Polk Audio Monitor 60 Series II (2010 Model) Single Two-Way Floorstanding Loudspeaker for $180 - $70 off with coupon code EMCKJKF57 [Exp 1/10] = $110 shipped. Multiple small-diameter driver design delivers wide dispersion, better mid-range, and more detailed bass response.
Being a peice of audiophile gear, this review is relative to the products price. Sure there are better speakers.
For the price these can be a no-brainer. They ARE audiophile quality. Old recording engineer here >> these are what they say they are. You'll need something along the lines of the PSW10 Polk subwoofer to hear more of the entire audible frequency spectrum. I use one sub here for each channel, and drive the Polk 60's with 200 watt monoblock amps, one for each side, as it really opens them up, even when played at moderate volume. (I laugh at tose that say they PSW10 doesn't produce enough bass, ESPECIALLY for the money when on sale). Decent, but not great, SPL level.
Other thoughts >> The older style w/silver front are actually much prettier. You wouldn't think so until you saw them side by side.
These are called 'monitors' for a reason. If you used these in a small studio they would be OVERKILL. 'Nuff said.
#1, enough bass depends on the room size. The PSW10 are better than nothing, but there are better subs out there, of course you spend more too.
The other big criticism for the PSW series subs is the sound quality. They are not that musical of a sub. They are fine for HT, but for music listening you will want something better.
The DSW series subs from Polk are great for music. But there are also other great subs from other manufacturers at the same price range though. I have Polk LSi9 bookshelves with a basic HSU STF-2 sub. It's great for music but doesn't have enough bass for HT. It's not bad, it just could be better. Still, I listen to music 90% of the time so the HSU suits me fine.
Back on topic... I agree with you that these speakers are great for the price. My LSi speakers are better, but they also cost way more, and there are better speakers out there than the LSi9's too. I love Polk because they have some great offerings and great prices.
Adding the lone, "of course they cost more", makes the point not valid. Which is why I stated >> Being a peice of audiophile gear, this review is relative to the products price.
The Polk Subs perform great in my room size of 12x14, which would compare to a small studios size. I still no of no better sounding sub, for 89 bucks on sale, than the Polk. Add the quality of build and the beautiful cherry finish and the wararnty and it still ads up to >> the best deal on an 89 buck, shipped to your door free, sub.
