Newegg has the Polk Audio RTi A9 Cherry High Performance Floorstanding Speaker (single) for $500 with free shipping. Real wood floorstanding speaker features all MDF construction and resonance-free enclosures, dual 5.25" polymer composite cone drivers, three 7" polymer composite subwoofers and one 1" silk/polymer composite dome tweeter.
Hmm.. not sure how something can be "real wood" and "all MDF" at the same time... Not that it's bad to make speakers cabinets with MDF.
These things are great but they are beasts. They are quite heavy. They will do well without a subwoofer for music and OK without a sub for HT. However, for rel LFE in movies you will still want a subwoofer.
Real wood veneer I guess, since MDF damn sure ain't wood.
these are serious speakers. you need a serious HT receiver / amp to feed them.
The exterior is real wood. The interior MDF. Helps with dampening.
No you don't. 90dB sensitivity while not qualifying them as highly efficient, is still quite manageable for loud sounds with an honest/true 30W/channel amp (just about any name brand ~ $100 bookshelf stereo system is around this range as an example, though those are only 2 channel and no video features).
If you want to rattle the floor THEN you're going to need a few hundred watts worth of amp to drive a sub or of course a sub with it's own amp built in.
