Got a pair for my computer desk. Very nice sound compared to typical computer speakers. Not too large next to a monitor either. Of course, some type of basic amplifier is required. But a decent one can be purchased between $30-$100 depending on features and power.
Yeah, once you go to bookshelf speakers you probably won't ever again want to use computer speakers unless your desk space is very constrained.
