GoldenGadgets.com has the Portable Hybrid Solar Charger for Blackberry, iPhone, Nokia, etc for $20 - 10% code XMAS08 + $3 shipping = $21 shipped. Solar Panels have charge and maintain the built-in 2000 mah Lithium ion battery inside, providing USB spec power for your devices.
Keep looking at one of these solar chargers, but haven't jumped on a deal yet. Anyone use one and care to comment on the worth of them? I could see this being handy for the iPod on a camping trip, but didn't know how much sunlight was needed to get a good charge.
Looks handy considering it provides a straight forward 5V over USB so you can use it with damn near anything. $25+ shipping everywhere else. The power situation in the north east this weekend has me rethinking the value of this kind of stuff...
I bought two chargers from them recently. One is a solar panel charger with a build-in 1350mA batary, claimed having 1000mA current output. I charged the unit with USB power at a few house, the charger then worked great. I measured the voltage and current and it seems the voltage is ok (5.5V) but the current output is under 1000Am. So it can charge well my phones and mp3/mp4 devices which only required under 1000Am current but not for my Palm Centro cell phone, which requires charging current exact 1000mA or over.
The instruction says that it takes about 10-15 hours under direct sunshine to have a full charge of its battary if only using sun power. Mine has a smaller solar panal than this one, so I would assume this one should take less charging time than 10 hours for a full charge.
Be aware of that, the plug adapters come with the battary are only for 4-5 common types. GoldenGadgets shipped my order fast, it took only three days crossing the States from west of the east. So far, I am happy with this purchase. It IS a cool gadget.
#7 This would not help you if you were in the Northeast this weekend. This is a SOLAR charger. Solar is the other energy source they are a little short of.
says 8-10 hours of direct sunlight to charge the battery in the charger, no mention of how long the battery in the charger takes to charge other items, or how many charges. this is unlikely to be practical.
also, the one in the pictures appears to be broken in the top corner... wonder how that reflects on the rest of them.
I've bought from goldengadgets before and had no problems with them.
I can't imagine these things work that well. I have a similar device that is just a battery pack (powers via USB or plug in) that has more output and it will maintain the battery level on my blackberry 8830 but it will not add charge t0 my phone's battery. Solar technology needs some additional advancement before something like this becomes worthwhile.
I got this at the end of 2007 when it was on sale. Unfortunately, it's been a disappointment. It came with directions that were poorly-translated into English. There is one red and one green LED which don't give good feedback as to whether or not the internal battery is fully charged. I tried charging it over several days in sunlight, but it never seemed to get to full charge--I could not get my Palm TX battery more than 20% off the charger. After trying to charge the internal battery via the USB connection instead, I was not able to get a better result. The case is made of flimsy plastic and the heft of the device makes me think that there really isn't much of a battery inside (it's too light). On the positive side, the connectors have been useful for other devices because of the large variety.

Anybody heard of this seller?
I have purchased from them. Quick shipping most of the products are good quality
Looks useful, but does it take it all the way to a full charge?
I've bought flashlights from golden gadgets in the past, but not solar cells. They seem to be a good company.
i have charge and maintain too!

yah. The docs (which are hilarious) says 4 hours for a full charge. I'd expect that ymmv.

It was sunny yesterday and today in CT and MA. Dunno about the rest of the NE.

Golden Gadgets is the home of no customer service ever.
some of those few-buck hand cranking flash light can do the same trick as well, just need to exercise a little bit
