Depends on how bad the problem is #1. With a WDS you're typically limited to at most half the peak throughput, and if it isn't a perfect link, even less than that. IF this give you enough addt'l gain to stay connected or improve a connection you could end up with a higher speed.
Of course, in a really bad situation you'd want both, set up the WDS and put a few upgraded antennas on everything.
However, a carefully aimed directional antenna may be the better solution for stationary clients.
