I have this in an apartment unattached to the wall. It's stable enough for my needs, but I have it behind the sofa. Attaching it to the wall is a good idea if there's kids or pets around.
I just mounted some hooks in a 2x4 on the wall. Holds 6 of our bikes and was about $15.
