Yup, everyone knows that MP3 players didn't exist before iPods began overcharging for less functionality.

It may *irk* some people to know that I have been using a Lexar LDP-200 that I purchased many years ago from Surplus Computers for $22 shipped (saw it on this website). I added a cheap SD memory card to it and put in an AAA battery and all systems go.
Total cost was somewhere around $30 for a 2GB player.

Battery problem? replace the AAA battery.
    ipod users: return to factory.

Flash memory issue? Replace dirt cheap SD card.
ipod users: time to buy new ipod.

Software? None. Appears as a replaceable drive when plugged into USB port.
    ipod users: itunes entrapment.

Player breaks? Hasn't happened. If it does, I'm out $22.
ipod users: increase that credit card debt for another fragile player.

I had the gen 1 Dell DJ and it served me for 3 years before I decided on a Zune (wanted video). It's a solid music player.

A pity they require a dedicated cable, good deal otherwise.

#5, I have that same Lexar player. I only wish that they would update the firmware to support SD HC cards. Otherwise, I agree 100% with you.
