Not a bad deal I guess. Once 3.0 software comes out it will be bearable. I have it now and damnit I can't downgrade back to 2 See what happens when you get greedy.

This place (www.cellulartrendz.com) has 1st generation (non-3G), 8g refurbs unlocked for $300. Don't know if it is that great of a deal but no contract. No AT&T; but also no 3G.
So what you are comparing is a long term forced spending of $720 ($30 data plan x 24 months) with a $200 subsidized puchase price of the phone at a refurb rate compared to just an out right purchase of the phone for retail from the apple store directly with no contract?
I think I would rather just wait till June and get the new iPhone if i realy wanted one. This doesn't sound like a deal to me.

#5 is right. I'm not too big in to cell phones so I got with the 1 cent deal from Amazon. However I was just out with a friend who has an iPhone. It was awesome. While I commented on how much his plan is ($120 a month), he uses is all the time and it's essentially his computer. Either way, it's a pretty cool device and I'm not an Apple fanboy (I have a Zune). I'm going to look into it when my current contract expires.
I own an iphone 3g without service. I also own a blackberry and windows mobile. They all have their own pluses and minuses but I have to admit that the iphone is the most enjoyable of the 3 to use where the windows mobile is the most flexible.
If you want the features but not the phone, get the ipod touch!
Not getting one because you hate apple is like missing out on the Wii because you hate Nintendo. The iphone is where all of the action is at.

Bought refurbished one in June - battery life, reception, dropped calls was horrible. You should NOT have to recharge on a daily basis, and, secondly, calls should NOT be dropping in your own area code.
Phone got stolen, January of this year. I bought a brand new one and STILL have the same problems, so buyer beware.
I'm not saying it's a bad product, it still serves its purpose for me, but for the spent money, my 1999 Samsung 8500 phone had less issues. Unfortunately, the iphone has added applications, music, (a terrible camera, how could you NOT do 3.2 megapixels minimum), and Internet access, capability of reading Word, .pdf files, etc.
Personally, I would like to see $50 a month unlimited Internet, phone, and text usage, which may happen as technology evolves.
Just Another Consumer Out There
In response to Wand: I could not get that link to work, but I read the cached version. It says that iPhone 1st generation owners that are at least 14 months into their contract can do an early upgrade and pay $199 (8GB) and $299 (16GB). It also says that they are probably doing this to blow out inventory prior to the next generation iPhone. I'm just not sure if this means I can keep my old iPhone or if I have to trade it in. Since it's worth around $300 on eBay, I'm planning on reselling it once I upgrade, but I'm waiting for the next generation to be released, hopefully with video capture functionality.
i bought a refurb 8GB in December and have had no problems with it whatsoever, it's as good as a brand new phone.
isnt the new model coming out in June?
The best part about being with AT&T is they let you pay a month in advance! I love loaning out my money for free!
regarding the camera, megapixels are not the beginning and the end of a camera.. the size of the ccd/cmos and the sensitivity is. It took me several years to finally understand this.
This is probably the only phone I've used that has a well designed/thought out camera. It even has UV coating/protection.
iphone camera is freakin horrible.. they better upgrade that pos next model
# 9 I agree with you on the dropped calls. I live here a few blocks from Cupertino and the dropped calls especially on the freeway are just horrible.
I called AT&T 3 times about this and all 3 times haven't been able to do SHI%^$^%$t for me. I had much better service with TMobile.
you don't save money they still rape you on the service plan fees.
I heard Skype works with i-phone now, does that mean one could fire AT&T and just use the WiFi option?
The new iPhone 3rd Generation is coming out in Summer, so Apple is trying to clear their inventory. Just waith for the 3rd generation, i heard it will have a front facing camera so may be Skype Video Conference might work....
Some time ago my brother got a 3G iphone and he gave me his deactivated 2G (8GB). I unlocked it using Winpwn, and basically am using it as an iTouch. I will say that it offers a very good user interface and is very enjoyable to use. I like the fact that there's tons of applications for it (including a lot of free ones), and there's a good tech user-forum base. Of course, it also has the usual Apple sins (sealed battery, no memory expansion slot), but overall it offers a good user experience. If you're not really looking into committing to an AT&T plan, or need the 3G network, a 2G iphone is a great alternative, but they're still pretty $$$$. I'm usually not sold on Apple products, but I will say the iphone is near excellent.
