Buy.com has the Remote Controlled Switch Socket 3-Pack for $16 with free shipping. It allows remote operation of many electrical devices, including lamps, appliances, tools and more (not sure about the tools though). Amazon also has it for $16 with free shipping on $25.
These outlets are great. I hooked one up to my tv which uses 24 Watts during standby if turned off with the tv switch. (All instant on tv's are on standby and continue to use low power when switched off unless disconnected from the outlet. My tv lists 24 Watt standby.) I bought these outlets 2 years ago and saved $174, ($87 annually) for the tv alone. Quick pay back.

Thanks #1, I never realized just how much juice my Cable box, TV and DVD player might be drawing on standby. I'll give them a try.
And Ben, don't forget - if you're Amazon Prime, shipping is free.
Shipping is not free with Amazon Prime because you PAY MONEY for Amazon Prime.
Most TVs do not use anywhere near 24W on standby. Closer to 3W when they seem "off".
What if you lose the remote?
