Geeks.com has the Remote Controlled Switch Socket 3-Pack for $14 + $8 shipping = $22 shipped. It allows remote operation of many electrical devices, including lamps, appliances, tools and more (not sure about the tools though). [BizRate]
We have become so lazy, imagine sitting in bed and your girl is like "shut off the tv and go to sleep" you hit the power button on your remote for your TV and you pick up your remote that's liked up to your lamp and hit power and bam you just shut your entertainment and lights off without using a frikin muscle!
this is a good deal. I got the handy switch for 15 the other day and that only controls one socket. This controls 3 independently. Good deal for those who are in need of something like this.
I have the two pack version of them. I use it to reset my cable modem and router that is located in my basement whenever I have issues. Only issue is that you don't really know if the pushing of the button worked. The remote does not get any signal to itself to tell you that the switch is on or off.
The remote uses a 12V "23A" battery. WTH? The 433.82MHz remote transmitter used in this product's remote control should work off of a couple AA's easily and give you 100 foot range, using easily available or even rechargeable batteries.
The 23A is for products that really need 12V.
This makes me wonder what other mistakes are hidden in this design. You don't want something like this going up in flames on you.

How much power does each remote unit draws when they are turned "off"? They need power to wait for the remote to power them "on" right?

I'll get myself some of these!
Can I "think" the switch off and on? Then I really wouldn't have to move a muscle.
"Thinking" them off and on would be very baconmaybe we could hook them up to the thinking mouse and use a mouse button to push the switch!
these are ok but the clapper works better. you don't need a remote, just clap!
Just sleep.. the wife will get annoyed and go turn it off. LOL
Plug obama into this, hit the OFF switch, take the batteries out of the remote and the world will be a safer, saner place.

In my opinion you're better off with a small system from X10 (.com). More flexibility, expandability, etc.
