Oh the memories! I built an MAME arcade machine for the garage with all the old stand-up arcade games. Its a big hit.
This is the best one of these devices, most of them are garbage. It's small, it can use real Super Nintendo controllers (most of these devices come with their own, incompatible, crappy ones.) The SNES sound is right or close to it. The colors for NES games are a little flat, but most people don't notice. The compatibility is high, there are only a few games that won't work, games I can almost guarantee you don't have. You DO NOT have to blow in the cartridge slot.
I have tried it on some pretty old NES games, including ones doing exotic things software/hardware-wise, and it all worked fine.
HOWEVER,
If you have an HTPC or a computer hooked up to your TV, you are still going to get a better experience just emulating, true. Edge smoothing and enhanced audio synthesis makes the experience 10x better. Run Secret of Mana on ZSNES with edge smoothing and CD-quality synthesis and it looks like a 2D PS2 RPG.
This is a great price for this device, usually they end up about 50 dollars after shipping is figured in. If you have a stack of cartridges and small children, this is a great diversion for them on holidays to keep them away from your HDTV. Just plug it into a smaller one.
Somebody mentioned the Sega Genesis clone. Read up on that one, it has a lot of problems.
#12 - There is no way to get GoldenEye legally, other than on the original N64. That's because it was made by RARE, and the license is shared by Rare and Nintendo. AND Rare was bought by Microsoft. One would think they could come to some deal to put it on the Wii Virtual Console and the Xbox360, but currently, no deal has been worked out.
Thanks #23
I heard that RARE had something to do with it. I wonder if that's why Diddy Kong Racing has never resurfaced (except on the DS)... I loved that game too.
