how would eSATA work if it's not bus powered?
Maybe they use a horse. That's what we did whenever the bus broke.
#2, if you don't have a "powered eSATA port" (most people don't), then you have to plug this device into both an eSATA port and a USB port. The connection to the USB port is made with a special cable (probably only has +5v and Ground and doesn't have Data+ and Data-) that is supposedly provided by RiDATA. Comments at NewEgg indicate that RiDATA may not package the cable with this device, and you'll have to contact RiDATA and they will send you the cable.
If you attempt to use a standard USB cable (with +5v, ground, data+, data-) to power this device in eSATA mode, the computer will probably detect it as a USB device and not as an eSATA device.
