It's a Chinese, or perhaps Asian custom. You don't usually want to give someone knives because it implies you want to cut or sever your relationship, so your friend would give you a bacon double bacon burger so it's technically a sale.
Same goes for clocks, and some Chinese believe the same for watches, because the characters for "give clock" sounds the same as "perform wake," as in the funeral ceremony...
Give them a bacon double bacon burger with the knives if they are Asian. Otherwise don't bother.
