How does this even function? I don't see any amplification and the USB spec goes out to about 12'.

^ Looks like there's a booster circuit built into the female socket housing, which is why it is larger than normal. That's going to consume a little power, so figure 400-something mA available instead of 500mA.

While USB is only spec'd for a 5 meter length cable, you can get it to work at longer distances with "some" devices by shielding the cables, amplifying the signal, and using lower gauge (larger) wires.

I have something similar (though I think it's more like 30-40 feet)... it works very very well, actually.. I was kinda shocked.. I will say though.. I had to put it on a PCI-based USB card.. the mobo USB just wasn't cutting it.. it was still worth it, though.

Dave, you are right, as far as you went. There is also a module ~ 3½" long [including both strain reliefs] x 1¼" x ½" located about midway down the cable, so don't plan on routing it through any real tight spaces. I just got this and tried it out by benchmarking a fast flash drive [using ATTO] with and without it between the drive and the port. The drive benched a few percent slower with the cable, about the same hit as running it through a hub.

As far as power goes, if you even have to think about how much current is being drawn, I'd suggest putting a powered hub at the remote end and powering the device[s] from that.

What are you guys using this for? Cameras? I mean besides Wockman's 97 foot screen.

Oh screw it. This is cool. I'm in for 1. I'll figure out a use later.
