Dell uses DRM on their power supplies. The BIOS will refuse to charge the battery when using non-Dell PS
^ I've come across that too, and sometimes the laptop won't even run the CPU higher than its minimum speed. ie 1.6GHz CPU stuck at 600MHz. Thanks Dell. Fortunately you can get the most popular genuine Dell branded power bricks off eBay for under $22.
Just another reason among many to avoid Dell laptops.
