I don't understand why you'd spend a slot on something that works perfectly well in a USB version. Slots are for stuff that needs mega bandwidth, or needs to be accessible at boot time.

USB has higher latency and uses more CPU time. Whether it works as well distance/signal strength wise has a lot to do with the two specific products contrasted.

At least with USB you can put it on an extension cord to get the antenna away from the metal case for better reception but if you have a good signal and a free PCI slot, I can see why some would want PCI. Also with USB, you'll decrease the range if you have other cables or USB devices plugged in nearby (I mean within a couple inches) if a significant % of the area isn't free of metal of any sort.

I'd only recommend this for web browsing. The card has a 10% retransmit rate which makes for noticable lag spikes. That's not a big deal when browsing the web or downloading files, but it's very obnoxious for online gaming. When using Wireless Zero in Windows XP the lag is much worse so you have to use the RAlink software to manage the connection (no idea why, both methods have the same retransmit rate). It's usable for gaming if you use the RAlink manager but with a strong signal any respectable wireless card should have a zero retransmit rate. The problem seems to be tied to the RA2561 chip used on this card, as in researching my lag problem I found other users having the same problems with this chip on other manufacturer's cards.

That doesn't sound good. Should I get a USB then?
