Batteries probably good for 6 months tops. Then see what replacements will set you back. God made wire for a reason.

i just bought very similar set at Lowes for $10
Don't know about these in particular, but some of the similar Malibu sets use a single NiCd AA that lasts for about 3 years (if you can accept their capacity/runtime dropping to about 50% at that point) and if you buy generic replacement batteries instead of the Malibu-branded ones, they only cost about a buck a piece.
Main downside is they aren't very bright, best used as markers, not to illuminate anything but themselves.
