I got a black dinged floor display model at Lowes for $600 couple of months ago. Rear LED lighting is cool... Black is as bad as stainless for showing finger prints...

You're going to find more and more customers dissatisfied with their new appliances in the future. They're all cutting corners on parts, using less metal to save on materials cost and smaller compressors for the same reason as well as an attempt to boost efficiency... small efficiency gains don't necessarily make up for a large repair bill.

You may happen to buy one with on-site service, but don't expect it working again within the time the food inside would take to spoil unless you're making regular trips to buy bags of ice.

Food spoilage is only one problem. We had a leak in the water intake unit because of really cheap plastic pipe in the back. It flooded the back and leaked into the living room under the wall before we saw it.

If that was the only problem with GE then it would be ok. We have had an issue with every single appliance that was newly put in when we bought our place some years back. 2 out of the five were repaired thanks to recalls that GE had (telling you how massive the problems were). Their washer and dryer combo unit completely flooded our entire living room and office causing about $18000 worth of damage thanks to a 50 cent clip that they stopped putting one one of the pipes (according to their own repair guy). The insurance covered the damage and then sued GE recovering our deductible money (thanks State Farm) and whatever of the money they paid us.

Right now our oven is on the fritz. OUR OVEN!!! how can that go bad?

^ Might be that the wire was too low a gauge and the heat where it connects to the heating element oxidized it till there was nothing left. I've had to rewire a couple stoves for this reason, luckily a local mom'n'pop hardware store carried the wire, as the big name places like Home Depot and Lowes don't and it costs an arm and a leg for that stuff (silicone rubber insulated with asbestos or similar sheathing over it) if bought in bulk online. I could've gotten it locally from Grainger too but their smallest roll was > $100.

Maybe I should've bought the roll and sold the extra by the yard on eBay.

I bought the service warranty with mine. All modem kitchen appliances are suspect to break down. So far so good with my Samsung. Better than the cheap of junk side by side Maytag I bought in the 1990s.. It broke down after a couple of years of use..

My 20 year old GE oven glass front door spontaneous shattered a couple of months ago...

Replaced original water pipe going into the fridge. Repaired ice maker once (feed issue). At least twice a year I take the lower cardboard back off and vacuum dust. Used electric leaf blower to blow the dust -- the first time. It's like owning a Yugo without all the benefits.

^ Which refrigerator? Samsung or GE?

That's all great advice Dave, but if I did all that how would I keep the local GE economy going?

The sad thing about all this is that practically all of these brands are essentially made by one or two companies: GE, Maytag, Whirlpool, Kenmore, Frigidaire.

Got me one of these Samsung "deals" a few years ago, sucker lasted 2 yrs, the coil in the freezer would freeze up, as the defrost unit failed, google it, many have had similar issues. Had 4 GE's over the years (I'm 51), never any issues.

Samsung customer support on the appliances is HORRIBLE! Yes it's a good idea to remove the front bottom cover, pull the fridge out, take off the back cardboard cover & blow it out both ways. Vacuum up the mess you made but it will help to extend the life of your fridge & lower your electric bill.
