Is this even necessary? I have laundered a USB stick and two microSD cards and they haven't had a problem since (over a year ago).

As a pro photog- I cannot imagine why I would need a waterproof card- or need to worry about it getting run over by a truck.
Most all SD cards have probably been pretty water resistant. I've had a few take a dunk and come through fine once allowed to dry. Somebody got the bright idea to market that little known attribute.
Just in case you drop your Cannon D60 camera in the water or ran over by a truck, the memory card is still good. So just replace $1199.00 camera.
