Crap player, slow loads and they apparently break a lot (based on the amount of refurbs on the market).
I purchased a refurb from NewEgg months ago and it had all the symptoms people had been describing. Broken or missing tray door, terrible packaging (player was literally flopping around inside the box). As for playback itself, no matter the disc, it would get about 15-20 minutes into the movie and freeze.
NewEgg was good with the return (as expected), I have no experience with OnSale but if they are not good with returns, I wouldn't risk it. Hell, for $132 I wouldn't risk it anywhere honestly, just go to Walmart and get the lower end Sony BDP. It's faster than the Samsung and only $200. You'll thank yourself.
I'll wait for violet ray.
#2, don't. It's plenty in the air and people must wear UV protection glasses... and BTW, it probably caused Mike Jackson to meet Joe Black.
Ah BlewRay players are getting close to the $100 mark. Sorny's lil pet must be getting close to obsolete!
Saw this thing hooked up to a 60" Samsung Plasma at the local electronics store. Adjusted the picture manually myself to something not mind blowingly bright and stepped back to watch Spiderman 2 (or whichever one had Sandman in it). What a piece of crap! The picture was awful! Tons of artifacts, not smooth, the blacks were terribly banded. Either that or the $3000 TV I was watching sucked as well (I doubt that but...) Not to sound like a commercial but I spent good money on the latest Oppo blu-ray player and there is NO comparison. That thing looks GREAT on my 65" DLP. I can only imagine what it would look like on a nice Plasma.
These had bad reviews when they were new. I bought a Panasonic instead.
I purchased one 3 months ago for $140 and has been working great for me. Not sure about what everything is talking about the picture quality being so horrible. It isn't too shabby for me on my Philips 46" LCD TV. I would recommend it. This is a really decent price IMO if you really must buy one now, but if not then just till the prices reaches $80-90 by the end of the year.
#7 yea, don't get me wrong, my father-in-law bought a Samsung player brand new and it's working fine, for now. I would just not recommend buying one of these refurbed even at this price.
I would (and kinda did) also say that if you were thinking about buying this one refurbed I'd spend the extra $80 for new and peace of mind. In that scenario I would HIGHLY recommend at least the $220 Sony (watch for Walmart special pricing) vs. Samsung. The picture quality of the Samsung I received was not nearly as good as the Sony and I ended up purchasing.
I do agree with you that at this point, it'd be worth the wait for anyone to hold out til the holidays for the $100-150 BDP's. I would also note that I regret not getting a PS3 alternatively, they are far better players and of course you get games and media functionality.
Good points fortlag
#8 you are absolutely right in the fact that this particular model is by no means the nicest model, however at this price it is a fair value.
I just don't like people talk down about a product that they may not have owned. Another good point you brought up is the PS3. It is probably the best investment to purchase a PS3 to have not only a good blu ray player, but also the option to play the highest quality games.
But if you are looking to save a few bucks and can not afford the PS3 then I would recommend going with a blu ray rom ($70)or this stand alone refur Samsung player. Just make sure you connect it to the lan wire and install the updates.
