If someone gave me one of these I'd hock it. IMO, not a good player. Spend $100 more and get a PS3, whether you like to game or not, the PS3 is one of the top rate BDP's out there.

It's not even $100 anymore. You can get deals on the PS3 Slim for anywhere from $250s to $270s. Pay the extra and get the PS3.

The PS3 may well be the best bluray player out there, but that makes for a VERY expensive player. The last DVD player I purchased 4 years ago cost $25 and is still going strong.

Is the improvement in video quality really worth that much?

I'm now downloading and playing videos using my PC hooked up to my big screen TV. No fragile disks. Good quality video.

I might buy a bluray player for $50 for greater versatility. I'm not shelling out $270 for a PS3 or $200 for a poor quality bluray player. It's all just not worth it.

A friend just purchased a cheap DVD player to replace his broken one. He also doesn't think that bluray is worth it.

Incidentally, on the subject of fragile disks, I'm assuming that the more data you pack onto a disk, the more susceptible it becomes to fingerprints and other assorted dings and scratches. So I presume bluray disks are more fragile than DVDs which are more fragile than CDs.

Might as well pick up the Sony player since it's the price.

Blu-Ray players offer significant improvements in video AND in audio if you've got a good audio system, IMHO. I own a BDP-1500, bought back in the days (not very long ago) when it was half the price of a PS3, but I'd echo the comments of many here -- at this price, buy the PlayStation.

We are all aware of opinions that BDP's aren't worth the money for you. Good for you. You sound like a broken record constantly sharing your opinion (to uninterested eyes) that you don't think the technology is worth it or will last and that streaming/playing from a computer is better.

I certainly won't disagree with you that streaming and computer playback have a strong future however for those of us who like to have this 'fragile' media, BD is the obvious route. There's less DRM worries there also.

Fact is if someone is interested in BDP it's extremely unlikely that your going to sway them into continuing to buy low quality DVD holding out on an HD solution that's part of a magical world that will never exist where you can watch any and all HD content, absolutely on demand without any delay or extra cost.

Yes I know PC's can offer that to an extent but not everyone wants a computer hooked up to their TV, plain and simple. In fact, probably 90%+ of consumers interested in HD just want an easy HD solution and wanna run to Blockbuster and not have to worry about any extra BS.

I got this BluRay player free when I bought my TV. I owned a PS3 so I sold this player to my brother. It lasted 6 months before it broke. They're paying for the parts to fix it but he still has to pay $80 in labor. I'd do what other suggested and just get the PS3.

#8, great example for why I say skip this player. Cool you got it free, sucks your bro is having to pay for repairs.

If you shop around the net you will see an unlimited supply of these Samsungs being sold as refurbs. That alone has to be in indication that this player is not one to last. I purchased a refurb from Newegg, took a chance and lost. The disc-tray door was broken off on delivery, I figured I'd give it a shot anyhow. Played a movie for less than 10 minutes, started gringing and stopped working. Lucky for me Newegg took it back, no questions asked. I honestly wonder if there could be some sort of class action against Samsung on these players. If these were cars, they'd be lemons.

Totally agree that PS3 is the way to go. Got mine last year on a credit card deal for $250 and it's one of the best players out there. Recently saw a PS3 slim 120 GB for $240. Definitely the best way to go IMHO. BTW I think HD is totally worth it but maintain that not everyone has a eye/value for the extra detail. Makes great fodder for flame wars, though.

#3- Yes Blu-ray is much better than DVD. I know people that made your same argument about the differences between DVD and VHS. I am glad they came around to the idea of new technology.
