Good printer, good price. My only disappointment is that the picture shown would imply the paper tray completely closes when filled with paper. Not true, the front door will be open with paper sticking out.
Sounds very strange they would do such a thing. Does it come with an almost empty toner?
what do you guys think of this printer? im thinking about purchasing this...does anyone know how much toner for this generally goes for?
Officemax has the same printer on sale now. It's $60 without rebate. You can get $15 off if you have the coupon.
You can buy refills (not a new cartridge, but a refill. each cartridge can be refilled 3 times) for about 5 to 8 bucks a pop. new cartridges are pretty cheap too. all on ebay.
The paper tray has to stick out the front because the printer itself is too small to keep the paper in, it was a cost cutting measure.
The printer is built cheaper than some but again it's a cost cutting measure. Prints text great like all lasers do, but doesn't do very well at greyscale (pictures).
It comes with a 1/3 full, 1K starter cart. IIRC, otherwise new carts are 3K pages which doesn't really make them any cheaper than larger carts (for larger printers). #5 mentioned refilling yourself with bulk toner but I don't recall there being a refill cap, you have to take a cover plate off which is a bit messier than with some printers (Or drill or melt a hole in it though if you drill the hole you'll still need to take the cover plate off to get the debris out one time, then plug or tape over the hole to seal it after each refill).
If your needs are almost entirely text or line-art (like webpages or graphs) this will do the job fine at a good price, though with some other printers the higher initial cost is resulting in it coming with more toner, others are faster and can be networked with is nice.
good printer, reliable, i've found replacement toner on ebay for cheap. Not a bad deal, but I just got one from my local fry's for $59.99, so $10 more and no rebate hassle.
You DO NOT need to drill or melt a hole in the cartridge for this model (unlike the HP 12A toners which you do - big time headache). You simply use a screw driver to pop the end cap off - which can easily be replaced when you're finished. It's all quite neat and quick - my asst and I do it all the time at my office. You also have to replace the fuser which will take you 1.2 seconds as the fuser is on the outside of the cartridge. The fusers come with the toner refills when you buy them.
#6 - You should know for sure if you need to drill or melt a hole or not before you comment.
While no printer is truly "green" this one, when you buy the refills is quite easy on the environment.
I got this printer at staples for 50 bucks and had my dad buy one as well.
haven't used it much, but it seems to work fine. I just hooked it to a network printer server today so I can print from any computer. wheee.
Yes, I like this printer. Resolution is great, sometimes too small/fine for my eyes. Even repro B/W pics fairly well.

Either you are using 3rd party carts with a cap that original carts don't have, or it's a remanufactured cart where they drilled a hole and put a cap on as I suggested when they remanufactured it, or you aren't talking about the same printer. One generation older Samsungs did have a cap on the carts.
Then again, since I have been refilling mine instead of buying any new carts today, I suppose it is possible Samsung has changed the carts to now have a cap but I am sure they didn't when I bought my printer, that I had to use a screwdriver to take 2 or 3 screws out that were holding down a plastic panel that goes across the length of the cart.
I have no idea what you are talking about with replacing the fuser. No you do not have to repla... [Truncated]
How does the samsung compare to the brother 5240?
This is a great printer - I highly recommend it. I've had mine for intermittent printing. I print 3-5 pages a week and the original toner has gone almost a year now (bought it black friday last year for same price) with no signs of stopping...
