Monochrome printers costing more than $30 went out in the 1980's but it costs $237 at Amazon so if you need one I guess this is a better deal.

#1 I have this printer, plugged into a wireless network, and it's been totally reliable and great. We use it with both PCs and Macs- no problem. I hear that Linux support is also excellent. Great print quality. Quiet, fast, and compact. The auto duplex is fabulous.

this printer does have the benefit of 10/100 ethernet, ps3/pcl6, and "automatic duplexing" (but i can't tell if this is a feature of the hardware printer or the software drivers).

the ethernet and printer language support makes the printer forever compatible. i've had family members get burned by printers that used a proprietary printer language only supported by the manufacturer's (canon) software drivers and upon upgrading/changing their OS (WinME -> WinXP, WinXP -> OS X) they learned there was no driver and no way to use their printer. everybody supports ethernet & ps/pcl (and usb printer class as that's probably what this printer uses for usb).

#4 auto-duplexing is a hardware feature, though can be controlled with software settings.

#6 wow, that's a harsh review. I've had no such problems, through 3 toner cartridges. Print quality has been great for me -- as good as any b/w laser -- basically, excellent for text and very good for b/w photos.

How's noise? I bought brothers 2140, but it's too noisy, and consumes much power.
