For 400 bucks, where is the rest of the computer?

I can't believe how companies take a $500-$600 laptop, cut the specs by 3/4, and sell if for 25% less than a normal laptop, yet people are tripping over each other to buy one.

@whatatay-granted, netbooks aren't for everyone but for the "road warrior" who doesn't need a lot of computing power, this isn't bad. And, where are you going to find a notebook that weighs 2.8lbs? That is worth something to some.

If you think this is bad, wait until you see the new round of netbooks (that are already out). They are selling for over $700 (more features).

The issue isn't notebook vs. netbook, it is netbook cost the same as notebook.

makes no sense to compare this to a laptop. they serve very different functions. for the most part, people who buy this don't need the extra 25% in power, but they do need the 50% reduction in weight/size and big + in battery life.
really, does a businessman who surfs the web and runs word really need core2duo or 4 gb ram?

i'm thinking of getting the nc20, essentially same computer with a 12" screen and full sized keyboard. anybody have any thoughts?

@whatatay: I agree with tocnfl. How many of those $500-$600 notebooks are under 3lbs. Most people are willing to pay a premium for a smaller, lighter computer.

I've seen some Sony laptops that weight under 3lbs that cost well over $1000.

I'll probably get one next year when they get a littler larger SSDs and a dual core.

I just want a netbook that can run DirecTV2PC and doesn't get too hot in my lap. If we would ever see the GN40 or ION chipsets in an actual device I think I would be golden.

I got one of these in ADDITION to my 4GB/2Core laptop. I take it when I'm on the road and doing presos to a bunch of suits. When I gotta do hardcore demos for a tech audience I take the laptop that lets me spin up a few VMs to simulate a small data center environment. The challenge is in keep things synced up between them but there are some good tools for that.
