NewEgg.com has the Samsung SH-S182D 18X DL DVD+/-RW Drive (Black) for $30 + $0 shipping = $30 shipped. Supports Dual Layer burn speeds of 8x in both DVD-R and DVD+R formats.
I always regarded Plextor as being the best. However, they're not just a few bucks more. They're like 2x more usually. I also like Pioneer but that might be my holdover from the days when there were only 2 vendors available (back in 1993/1994) for burners, Pioneer & Yamaha. I'd probably still be buying Yamaha if they still made burners.
My Sony just locked up. They always have such great prices, but crap hardware. The only reason I'm not pissed is that when a $30 drive breaks, I buy a new one for $30 and get much better speeds instead of holding onto some $60 - $90 high quality drive for years and watching as the newer drives come with new features and higher speeds. Still a pain in the a$$ though.
I bought this this burner in early October from newegg for $30 shipped. I have used only Verbatim 16X DVD+R discs and they have ALL burned flawlessly. I have used only Verbatim for years now and have been very pleased with their media. I was really considering the newest 18X NEC burner as I also have NEC's ND-3550A but through thorough research before buying my Samsung SH-S182D burner did, in fact, find that the new 18X NEC burnerwas made for them by SONY (see post #3). I am not a big fan of SONY burners many of which are made for SONY by Lite-On. I have had a few of the older Lite-On burners which I liked but lately I have not been impressed by their burners.
Make sure to check the media compatibily chart with this burner. I purchased one and it only burns my favorite media (Ritada 8x DVD-R) at 4x.
i think NEC burners are the best...maybe few bucks more, but worth it.
I agree. The pinacle is the ND-3550A, but you can only get them on eBay now.
The new NEC burners are relabeled Sony low end stuff. meh
#3 Sony burners are rebadged BenQ burners AFAIK. So why would NEC rebadge Sony?
#2,
