Throughput is a function of density and spindle speed. If there's more data packed per inch, the spindle speed can be less and maintain a constant throughput, dig? In a 2TB drive, the density is so high that you're going to get 100MB/s or so no matter what speed you spin the platters, which should probably be enough for any application you have in mind.
That said though, throughput is always limited... you just have to decide how much limiting you're willing to put up with to save money. Or you have to buy fancy SAS drives at $0.80/GB, or fancy SSDs at $1-2/GB.
Don't know if it applies to the firmware shipping on these drives today, but a newegg reviewer pointed out a firmware patch for a potential bug in these,
