DON'T BUY THIS PIECE OF JUNK !!!

I bought one of these for my wife (instead of an iPod) and it locked up after 1 week. Took it back to Target and exchanged it and the second one locked up after 1 day! No resetting (or anything else) would correct it.

End result: got refund and bought an iPod...(a little more money, but still working after a month).

May be that's why there are so many of these refurbished units. . and maybe the problem is fixed from the refurbish process??

I have a 2 GB refurb ($35) and it's been working very well for about a month. The cool thing about the refurbs is they are most likely the v1 series and that makes Rockbox an option. I put an 8 gb card in and it's been running well since. Stock firmware isn't bad either. Updating it first thing if you want to run the stock fw is probably a good measure. That might have helped #1's situation.

Actually, most of the buy (and elsewhere) refurbs are not really refurbished, they are factory overruns stamped with an R and whiteboxed instead of retail packaging.

Can't you rockbox v2 now? Haven't checked up on that recently but I recall work was being done on that a long time ago. I agree with #3, upgrading the firmware right away is the best option.

I bought an 8GB version of the Fuze from Costco last year for about $70. I've never had a single problem with it.
There isn't a "released" version of Rockbox for the Fuze yet:

#4, #5: Yeah, it's usable on the v1 hardware even though not officially released. The only thing really missing IMO is USB support but it reboots into the original fw if you connect to USB so it's not a problem for me. I hear the v2 version still has a long way to go.
